http://lawdigest.uslegal.com/animals/equine/4377/  CAUTION: At 90 days a horse is still considered green broke. Newly
trained and young horses require an experienced rider/horseperson. A decent rider, with some guidance or lessons,
should be able to handle their horse after 90 days quite well. You need to be honest with your self and your abilities.

Horses, by nature, can be dangerous! Not only is the owner/rider’s safety an important factor to consider, but also,
a poor rider can completely un-train a well-trained horse! This is something that must be considered.    Click here:

MORE  ON FOUNDATION TRAINING FOR THE COLT AND HORSE
We train the everyday horse. Sturgell's Equestrian Center does not train for the show ring. Not that
we won’t take the ones bred for show! Simply put, foundation training is the same for all horses.
Each and every horse that comes here goes home trained to the degree the owner wants, is well
cared for and a better animal for it.

At Sturgell's Equestrian Center, we truly want the owner to be happy, but most importantly, safe. A
horse can only be as good as the rider can make him be. I do my part, then when the horse goes
home, I can only hope and pray the owner continues him. By the end of a 60-90 day training
session, I will be able to tell you about your horse’s nature and personality. You may not need me to
tell you anything, and that is fine also. I work for you-- but safety comes first.

Our specialty is putting a foundation on the young horse. Foundation training is more than
"breaking" him. It is a training process that is not rushed. It is building blocks for the future, just as
our children attend 12 years of school before attending college. A horse with a good foundation can
easily go on for specialized training, in either Western or English.

A horse can easily be started around 20-24 months old, if it is built well and healthy. Top trainers
agree that this is quite all right if the horse is not overly ridden or strained. At the Connors State
College horse training program, the majority of horses come in at this age. Futurity horses have to
be started this early in order to be qualified to show! This is an impressionable age; they don’t have
too many life experiences yet, and they tend to be easier to train. Lots of people still believe that a
horse needs to be in their 2 year old year before they'll start them to ride, and that is fine. We have
started older horses also.

For most horses being started, we do almost the same things. The main difference being time spent.
Some horses are quick learners and are laid-back in nature. These ones often prove to be easy to
train and time goes more quickly. Some are timid and skittish and require more time. We never want
to scare a horse or compound a fear he may be already carrying from coming to our place. Our
training is not rushed, but we  will not take advantage of your precious time and money either.

Our horse training is gentle and one lesson is built upon another. We introduce the O ring snaffle
bridle, but will not attach reins for a few days more, then it is just to have the feel of the reins-- no
bitting back yet. We will snug a rope around his girth instead of quickly saddling him for a number of
days to get him used to having something around his cinch area. We will introduce a light weight
saddle at first so that he can get the feel of the object on his back as non-threatening... these are
simple measures to keep your horses confidence up and his fear down. He will learn to understand
that daily handling is just a way of life and be ready for his next day's lessons.
All training is being done at the horse’s timing, not forced.

This needs to be understood. This is where clients get upset (thanks to RFDTV) thinking their horse
should already be riding when I have only gotten him used to the tack! Usually, round-penning and
tacking up goes quickly and smoothly and I have it done in a matter of days. It all depends on the
horse, his makeup, maturity and temperament. (If you are one of the people wanting Clinton
Anderson or John Lyon's "one day training," pay them that fee: but be wary, even a professionally
trained "one"day" horse requires an immense amount of furthered training. There is no ONE day
horse.

Here at Sturgell's Equestrian Center, we will put as much time on your horse as you want. 90 days is
preferable. Some people only want 30-60 days, then will send their horse to a specializing trainer.

Sturgell's Equestrian Center has this policy: if a colt is being sent here for 30 days of riding and it
has had no training, i.e., is young and/or not broke, it will take approximately two months to get it
done. The groundwork is essential, and we don’t play cowboy/cowgirl and ride a bucking horse until
it stops to say it is broke. We have had people get mad at us for not getting on their horse the first
day like “Joe Trainer” they watched on RFDTV!

Beyond colt foundation training, we can re-school a poorly trained horse, or put time on one that
has had a year or so off, with 30 days or more, if you like. That can be determined by seeing what
the horse can do.

With 90 days training, we do our best to make a well rounded horse before he goes home. By no
means is a 90 day horse considered a "finished" horse. He will need reinforcement, and perhaps
specialized training if you are wanting to do more with him.

If you have questions, please contact us! We treat every horse as if it were our own, in fact, we
tend to get attached to them!

Happy Trails!

We are honest people offering an honestly run service for you. If you have any questions about our
training methods, your own horse, or a horse we have trained in the past, we ask that you talk to
us about it. We take horses and training very seriously, and know we are blessed to be able to do
this. We will be more than happy to discuss business with you. Thank you!
