Where The Colts You Adore, Become The Horses You Love!

My journey to Sturgell's Equestrian Center:

Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember: Riding long miles to school in
the West Virginia mountains as a girl; Working on cattle ranches in Colorado as a teen; Getting to
know and learn from one of the first great horsemen/teachers--
Monty Foreman, in Colorado (and
then, many others to follow); Showing, competing, and just riding for the love of it; The ironies of
raising kids and colts at the same time... I've dealt with broken bones- more than once, the loss of
dearly loved horses- more than once; Being hurt by a horse, and being healed by a horse...

My entire catalog of memories somehow or another will include a horse in it.
Sturgell's Equestrian Center came into being literally at the same time I did, simply because, we
are the same entity...

My parents were not "horse people," so all my early "horse knowledge"came from riding my
uncles horses in the summers and through reading every equine medical book, training book,
riding manual and subscriptions to horse magazines I could get my hands on. I exhausted all the
local libraries, saddle shops and pet stores in my quest to learn more about horses (this was
before the days of DVD's, Internet and weekend clinicians!). It was an obsession that I just
couldn't let rest.

I had a dream of working with horses, and though I was not born with a silver tack set in my barn,
I didn't let that slow me down. I learned early what hard work and determination could
accomplish, and I have always maintained that good work ethic in my life.

I  finally became a horse owner when I was 14. My new mare was a jet black, welsh-cob type, and
had a bush for a mane. I thought she was beautiful! The day we purchased her I rode her five
miles down dirt roads to get back home, mostly at a flat out run, giggling like crazy and jumping
every branch and mud-hole found in the road! I was in heaven! She proved to be an excellent
teacher, and managed to endure my endless amounts of book knowledge and dreaming with a
reciprocating love. She was my tangible beginning to becoming a horse trainer and instructor,
and I still feel that same joy in my heart when I ride.

Thirty years later I can still remember every single horse I have owned, trained or had in my care,
and it has been many. The history of my life is incomplete without them, and though some weren't
notable in any way except to me, they each contributed to making me the horsewoman I am
today. I have owned stallions, raised many foals, and had a diverse collection of horses grace my
barns over the years: Quarter horses, Paints, Mustangs, Arabians, Saddle horses, and a Paso
Fino, just to name a few. I loved them all and appreciated the qualities that made them unique.

I tell all  this in addition to the fact that Les, my husband, has years more experience with horses
than I do. Though he did not follow the "training" career that I did, his family has always had
horses to work their "working" farm with. He grew up with drive lines in his hands, pulling mine
props, logs, plows and sleds with horses, and also riding them long distances for transportation.
He really IS my better half! Between the two of us there is easily 70 years of combined experience
with horses.

Sturgell's Equestrian Center, LLC, is a cumulation of many, many years of horsemanship skills,
experience and dedication. We care because you care... that is important to us.
